The mechanical cones, see tables below, are very much in use in areas with hard or gravelly layers with a large risk of loosing the cone. With the  jacket cone the point resistance and total resistance values are recorded in continuous readings, while with the friction jacket cone the cone resistance, the local friction are recorded in intervals while the total resistance is recorded continuously.

The recording of the pressure applied on the sounding tubes (total resistance) and on the inner rods (point resistance and local friction) is done manually with two hydraulic gauges or electronically with load cells and a GME-500 data acquisition unit.
